NCCP Demand Justice on Anniversary of Jarawala Attacks

Jarawala, August 16, 2024 — A event was held today to mark the first anniversary of the tragic riots in Jarawala, where dozens of churches, Christian homes, and graves were desecrated by extremists on August 16, 2023, under the pretext of blasphemy. The event was organized to remember the victims and to call for justice and protection for the Christian community in Pakistan.

The event began with a prayer service, led by Rev. Reuben Qamar, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan and Vice President of the National Council of Churches in Pakistan (NCCP). Rev. Qamar led the congregation in prayers for the families, and the entire Christian community, who continue to face fear and uncertainty in the wake of such attacks.

Following the prayer service, a peaceful protest was held to demand that the culprits behind last year's violence be brought to justice. The protesters called on the government to provide stronger protection and security for the Christian community, which has been living under the constant threat of violence. The protest also highlighted the need to repeal the blasphemy laws, which have been used as a tool for persecution against religious minorities in Pakistan.

Rev. Obaid Khokhar, Deputy General Secretary of NCCP, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of standing together in solidarity and continuing the struggle for justice and equal rights. "The events of last year were a dark chapter in our history, but we must not lose hope. We must continue to pray, to protest, and to demand that our rights are respected and our people are protected," said Rev. Khokhar.

The event concluded with a renewed call for peace, justice, and the protection of religious minorities in Pakistan. NCCP urged the government to take immediate action to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated and that those responsible are held accountable.
